How to Find Sunset Spots Near You
How to find a sunset spot with a clear western view and time your shoot for the best color.
Face the right way
The sun sets in the west, shifting north in summer and south in winter. Look for spots with an open view in that direction: hills, beaches, rooftops and lakes.
Use the map
Search spots near you in LensScape and look for viewpoints and waterfronts. Open each spot to see photos and check the view.
Know the timing
Golden hour starts about an hour before sunset. The best color often comes 10 to 20 minutes after the sun goes down, as blue hour begins. Stay for it.
Watch the clouds
Some high clouds catch color beautifully, while a thick low layer blocks it. Check the weather on the spot before you go.
Your next great shot is closer than you think.
